History
of Ummat by Lala Ram Lal
The
information give below is based on details we gathered talking to our
elders.
Our ancestors, it is said, were
compelled, under pressure of ruling authorities during the rule of
Mughal king Jehangir in the 16th century AD to leave
Hyderabad Deccan, with their families, folk singers, Purohits and
Marasis, for Rajasthan.
Some of them settled in Tehsil
Bhadra, District Jaisalmer. Our ancestors (of present Ummat
family) headed by SH. ZORAWAR SINGH with six members of his
family came to Punjab facing many odds and hardships on the way
and reached
NAWANSHAHR DOABA where Pathans lived.
Our ancestors, finding the land in the area fertile
and productive, decided to remain in the area determined to face all
hardships, upheavals of life. During this period another set of people
known as Butchers also came here (NAWANSHAHR
DOABA) deciding to settle down in this place.
Facing many hardships and
difficulties, our ancestors and those of Butchers forced the Pathans
living here to leave
NAWANSHAHR DOABA.
One can still see remains of old Mosques and wells in the outer area.
Both Ummats and Butchars then settled down in this fertile
land and thus laid the foundation of the town.
During the period the town was
divided as under. In the East were Ummat families and in the West
were the Butcher family having a bazaar in between. The Town was built
bit by bit to these families.
